Today marks the 22nd global “World Lupus Day”. In 2004, the International Lupus Foundation designated May 10 as World Lupus Day, casting a ray of light upon a disease long shrouded in stigma.

A well-known adage in the medical community goes: Lupus can do everything.

If the human body is likened to a fortress, then Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is the “mutiny” of the defending army—immune cells mistake healthy tissues for foreign invaders, turning every inch of terrain, from skin and joints to kidneys and the brain, into a potential battlefield.

SLE is a prototypical diffuse connective tissue disease characterized by autoimmune inflammation, with complex pathogenesis and diverse clinical manifestations. The exact mechanisms underlying SLE are not yet fully elucidated, but it is currently known to involve genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors (such as viral/bacterial infections and ultraviolet exposure).
